52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: Week 42: John Mildenhall Jr (1560-1614)

John Mildenhall/Mendenhall Jr. - My 14th Great Grandfather

Born: 1560 in LIttle Bedwyn, Wiltshire, England

Parents: Sir John Mildenhall (b. 1536) &
              Unknown Mother

(Some family trees on Ancestry.com have suggested his mother name(s) are/could be: Elizabeth, Helena Penbroke, and Lady Elvira G...but I haven't found any sources proving any of these names).

John's life is pretty amazing- full of adventures, exploration, and betrayal. Here is his life bio on Wikipedia:

John Mildenhall (1560–1614) or John Midnall was a British explorer and adventurer and one of the first to make an overland journey to India. He was the self-styled ambassador of the British East India Company in India. His is the first recorded burial of an Englishman in India.

John Mildenhall was born in 1560 in Little BedwinWiltshireEngland.[2] He was the son of Sir John Mildenhall.

John Mildenhall married Elizabeth Bates in England in 1579.

Mildenhall was one of the first British travellers to journey overland to India.[3] His name first appears in the Court Records of the British East India Company concerning a letter sent by him "to his master Rich Stapers, declaring what privileges he had obtained in the Indies and offering them, and his services to the Company for 1,500 pounds in hand". On 21 June 1608 the Court decided to consider his demand, and in October nominated Mildenhall as factor along with Lawrence Femell and Edward Abbott. However, Mildenhall demanded even more and as a consequence, negotiations came to an end.
Entrusted with the sale of the Company goods in the Levant, Mildenhall, travelled through Eastern Europe, passed through Scio and Smyrna, and reached Constantinople on 29 October 1599. After a six month stay in Constantinople, he continued his journey and arrived at Aleppo on 24 May 1600 where he stayed for forty-two days. On 7 June 1600 Mildenhall left Aleppo with an entourage of six hundred people and, after travelling through Bir, UrfaDiabekirButelisVanNakhichevan, Julfa, Sultanieh, Kazvin, Kum, KashanKirmanSistan andKandahar, he reached Lahore in 1603.
Mildenhall was entrusted with the sale of the Company's goods in the Levant but he deceived the British East India Company by escaping to Persia instead. A letter from Ajmer dated 20 September 1614 informs the British East India Company that an Englishman named Richard Steele had arrived at Aleppo along with another Englishman, Richard Newman, in pursuit of one John Midnall who had tried to flee with the Company's provisions to India but was overtaken and captured at Tombaz and taken back to Isfahan.
Mildenhall was released soon afterwards but his goods were confiscated. However, he received compensation of 9,000 dollars in return. Soon after his release, Mildenhall travelled to India and reached Lahore in the company of Newman who had had an altercation with Steele and had chosen to follow Mildenhall. They parted at Lahore but reunited at Agra.
Mildenhall reached the court of the Mughal Emperor Akbar and held discussions with him. However, he was regarded as an outlaw by the British East India Company whose exports to the Levant he had diverted to India. Moreover, his journey was not sponsored by the Company. Hence, the British East India Company sent Sir William Hawkins to India in pursuit of Mildenhall and to declare all his dealings null and void.

Basically, John worked for the crown as a merchant, became an outlaw and was a wanted man.

Family:

In many articles on John, it states that John married a Persian woman and had a son and daughter, but I couldn't find any records of this. All I know is that he did marry Elizabeth Bates, daughter of William Bates (1540-1563).

Elizabeth Bates:  b. 1562 in England
                            d. 1602 in Little Bedwyn, England

m. 1579 in England

Children: (There is speculation that he had other children, but I don't know)
1. Thomas Mildenhall (1580-1639)
2. Robert Minolde (b. 1582)

Death:
In 1614, while on one of his many expeditions to India, John fell ill and died.( I did a previous blog post for my Mappy Monday segment on John Mildenhall- Read it HERE). He was buried in the Agra Cemetery in Agra, India. He was only 44 years old.

52 Ancestors: Week 41: Moses Mildenhall (1666-1738)

Moses Mildenhall- My 10th Great Grand Uncle

Born: 24 Nov 1666 in Ramsbury, Wiltshire, England

Parents: Thomas Mildenhall III (1630-1682) &
               Joane Strode (1634-1682)

Siblings:

1. Margery (1655-1742)
2. Thomas IV (1657-1729)
3. John (1659-1743)
4. Joane (1661-1731)
5. Benjamin (1662-1740)
6. Stephen (1664-1721)
7. Aaron (1669-?)
8. Mary (1670-1728)

When Moses' father died, Moses inherited his father's house and the land his father owned in and around Marridge HIll, England. The amount of land was not mentioned in the Will.

Despite owning land and a home, Moses immigrated to America with a few of his siblings. I don't know if he sold the land and house before moving, but before arriving to America, he purchased 500 acres of land along the Brandywine River on 05 Sep 1685 from John Ewen. The land had originally been purchased from William Penn in 1682.

The Mendenhall siblings who immigrated to America (Margery, John, Benjamin, Moses & Mary) all settled in Pennsylvania. All of them except Moses stayed in America. After a year, Moses went back to England. I don't know if he just had no success here or just missed him home land, but he didn't make it here long. He returned to England and on 02 May 1691, Moses married.

Family:

Moses married Elizabeth Bacon on 02 May 1691 in Reading, Berkshire, England.

Elizabeth: b. 10 Jun 1673 in Lambourne, Cornwall, England
                 d. 31 Aug 1737 in Marriage Hill, Wiltshire, England

Moses and Elizabeth had 9 Children:

1. John (1692-1762)
2. Thomas (1694-1739)
3. Stephen (1696-1724)
4. Mary (1698-?)
5. Sarah (1701-?)
6. Joseph B. (1703-1800)
7. Elizabeth (1707-?)
8. Hannah (1707-?)
9. Moses Jr. (1717-?)

Death:

Moses died on 19 Dec 1738 at the age of 72.

I love this picture because of the woman behind it! Dorothy was a wife, mother and a doctor! She proved that Hodgkin's disease was not a form of tuberculosis and discovered the blood cell disorder characteristic of the disease. What a profound life for a woman of her time!!!
