Sharing Memories- Week 4: 3rd Grade

52 Weeks of Sharing Memories
A Challenge seen on:

Today's prompt is: Playing Hooky in Grade 2 and 3...

I didn't play hooky in these grades...I find it odd that a kid would! I was always a goodie-two-shoes though LOL

SO, I'll still write about these grades, but it won't consist of playing hooky...

The 3rd grade was memorable because I only went to school maybe half of the entire year. My teacher was Mrs. Kier (If I remember right)...and I had my first leg lengthening device on that year.

Here's what it looked like:

The above picture is just similar to the one that I wore- mine was only on the right leg, connecting to the femur and just below the knee.

I remember going to school in a very large wheel chair and the battery pack from the device would go off in class. The nurse or principal would have to call my mom to bring me a new one. I remember one time, we didn't have an extra battery and we had to go all the way to Scottsdale to get a new one from my doctor- it was about a two hour drive.

I was also home-schooled that year by a woman named Mrs. Soto. She would come to the house every morning. Sometimes I would just bawl because I was so tired and didn't want to participate...It was often hard to sleep with that huge contraption on my leg.

Although it was painful, I got a lot of attention with that device on. I remember walking around the outdoor swap meet and this actor (a guy from an Indiana Jones movie- my parents knew who he was)- he actually followed us through the park until he got the courage to say hello and ask what was wrong with my leg. People are always very curious about it...even now- years later. I tell them I had it done twice on my leg and once on my arm and they are just fascinated by it. It's amusing.

One Person at a Time....Eleanor

~Even though I have a lot of people in my family tree, I also have a lot of "holes" that need more research. Over the next few months, I am going to attempt to patch up those holes by doing research one person at a time- starting at the beginning of the list~

Today's Name: Eleanor

I had 3 women named Eleanor in my tree that needed to be researched:

#1: Eleanor
Before Research:
Eleanor was born in 1712 in Scotland. She married George Bartram (b. 1708 in Scotland) and they had at least 1 son: George (1734-1777). George married Ann Bartram (1741-1824)- my 2nd cousin, 10x removed.

After Research:
I didn't find much about Eleanor, just that she died on 03 Sep 1775 in Darby, Pennsylvania.

#2: Eleanor
Before Research:
Eleanor married Moses Owens and they had at least 1 son: John Robert (1826-1893). He married Anna Eliza Mendenhall (1830-1910)- my 3rd cousin, 6x removed.

After Research:
I couldn't find much about this Eleanor either. She was born about 1789 in North Carolina and she had 2 children:
John Robert (1826-1893)
Rachel (b. 1829)

#3: Elenor
Before Research:
Elenor had a daughter- Mary Virginia Shane (b. 1864). Mary married Henry Luther Mendenhall (1862-1937)- my 2nd cousin, 7x removed.

After Research:
Eleanor Swope was born on 17 Apr 1842 in Fall, Indiana and died on 06 Feb 1923 in San Francisco, California. Her parents were John Swope (1818-1876) & Mary Ann Stewart (1825-1881). I don't know if she had any siblings.

Eleanor married George Washington Shane (1837-1899) on 02 Apr 1862. They had 2 daughters-
Mary Virginia Shane (b. 1863)
Martha A. Shane (1867-1880)

Mappy Monday- Springfield (High Point) North Carolina

My 8th great grandfather was Mordecai Mendenhall (1713-1803). He was born in Concord, Pennsylvania but died in Springfield, North Carolina.

I originally thought that this was a town in Guilford County, but it turns out, that it's in High Point- zip code- 27263. After doing some research, it doesn't appear that there is much in this area.

There is the Springfield Friends Meeting House Cemetery where Mordecai is buried. On Findagrave.com, it shows that there are 78 Mendenhall's buried in this cemetery.

The cemetery is located at 555 E. Springfield Rd., High Point, North Carolina, 27263.

Could you recognize old technology?

I came upon this quiz while on Facebook this morning and instantly thought of my ancestors who would have used these items! I maybe used 2...(if that!)

Do you recognize these Obsolete Technologies?

Take the quiz and let me know how you did! I got 13/15! :)

~Even though I have a lot of people in my family tree, I also have a lot of "holes" that need more research. Over the next few months, I am going to attempt to patch up those holes by doing research one person at a time- starting at the beginning of the list~

Today's Name: Denorah

So, it turns out that Denorah, was actually Deborah...probably misspelled on a Census record.
Deborah Allen was born on 10 Apr 1775 in Shenandoah County, Virginia and died on 11 Sep 1842. She was buried in the Caesar Creek Cemetery in Spring Valley, Ohio. Her parents were Jackson Allen (1729-1786) & Elizabeth Davis (1735-1821). Deborah had 9 siblings:

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks- Week 20

Robert de Mildenhall - my 22nd great grand uncle

b. 1302 in Wiltshire, England
d. Unknown

Parents: Sir John de Mildenhall (b.1270) and unknown mother.

Siblings: Thomas de Mildenhall (b. 1300)- my 22 great grandfather

Robert held an interesting life!

Education:

University of Cambridge in England:

Robert received his doctorate in Divinity- licensed by a university to teach Christian theology or related religious subjects.

From 1334-1335, he was the chancellor of the University of Cambridge-- (List of Chancellors of the University of Cambridge)

By 1341, Robert was working for the kind of England as the Keeper of the Jewels. How he received this job is beyond me. In 1341, he was directed by the king to deliver two chests of ornaments to be taken to Calais for the service of the chapel on the ensuing Feast of Easter.

In 1347, the King issued a warrant for the delivery of 200 bows and 400 quivers of arrows to Robert, who was now serving as Chaplain of the King. These arrows were for service of the French War.

In 1351, the King issued a warrant for 440 quivers of arrows for service at the tower.

Robert wasn't the first Mildenhall (Mendenhall) to serve the King of England. His father- Sir John de Mildenhall accompanied the King many times and eventually received bouts of land and knighthood for his services.

His brother- my 22nd great grandfather- in 1339 accompanied Queen Phillippa into France.

Sharing Memories- Week 3: Driver's Licence

52 Weeks of Sharing Memories
A Challenge seen on:

The Olive Tree Genealogy

Ah, getting my drivers licence...looking back at it now- I was a TERRIBLE driver! :)

I got my licence before all of my friends and peers at school because I was a year older than everyone else--- all because of repeating kindergarten (Refresh your memory here).

I was 15 when I got my permit and 16 when I got my licence...and I think I was a sophomore in High School. I remember several people teaching me to drive- my dad telling me to "get the big picture"- something I didn't understand until years later....my mom teaching me to park the day OF the test....and then my (ex) sister-in-law teaching me to drive around town. Somebody (don't remember who) attempted to teach me to parallel park, but I never actually got that one down. During the test, the guy asked me to parallel park and simply told him I couldn't...I didn't get marked off and he told me this: "well, if you ever leave Prescott [Arizona], make sure you learn"...OK, thanks!

My husband taught me to parallel park maybe...two years ago and I'm 30...that's kinda sad actually LOL (Teach your teens how to parallel park!)

My driving test went fairly well, I think. I know I got points marked off because I turned too soon into a turn lane...there were old lines and I guess you get marked off for that. I passed the first try. :)

My first car was a 1984 Pontiac Phoenix (BOAT!) that we received free from a friend of the family. I don't remember it having power steering...and the gear shift - a thin stick-looking thing- broke and my dad actually "replaced" it with a screwdriver (NOT KIDDING!)

My car looked similar to this- but it was white---thank you Google for the picture.

It wasn't too long before I sold that car to some desperate people at a flea market for $800, took the $200 I had saved up and I bought a 1992 Ford Mustang- the car that I actually say was my FIRST car- because I loved that car. I had it for a long time and I even delivered pizza in it!

This wasn't my car...but thank you Google for having a picture of what my car looked like :)

Saturday Night Fun~Great-Grandparents

Time for another "Saturday Night Genealogy Fun!" with Genea-Musings!

Tonight's challenge: Did/Do Your Children Know Any of their Great-Grandparents?

1) Dana Leeds on the Enthusiastic Genealogist blog asks: "Did/Do Your Children Know Any of their Great-Grandparents?"

2) I thought that would be a great Saturday Night Genealogy Fun question--so please share your response with us in a blog post of your own.

3) For extra credit, or in case the answer is "No," then please answer the question for yourself, or your parents.

My son is almost 3 years old and he does "know" one of his great grandparents- his great grandma- Jane. I wrote know in parentheses because he IS only almost 3 and we've always lived in a different state than his great grandma Jane- so he doesn't really "know" her.

I, on the other hand, didn't know any of my great-grandparents. I barely knew my grandparents for that matter. Most of mine died when I was baby or before I was born. I did kinda know my grandmother Dorothy Potchik ('nee Hendricks)- you can read about her Here. She died in 2010, so when I was 26 years old, but I never really knew her. She always lived in Ohio, where I was born and we moved from there when I was 4. I think I'd only seen her once since the move and that was in the 6th grade.

My parents didn't know their great-grandparents either. All of them died before my parents were born.

Surname Saturday- Pierron

Today's Surname:  Pierron

My 3rd great grandmother was Margaret Frances Pierron. She was born on 16 Oct 1851 in Darke County, Ohio and died on 19 Aug 1923 in Greenville, Ohio. She married Richard Mendenhall (1852-1924) in 1872.

Richard and Margaret (Pierron) Mendenhall

Margaret's parents were Nicholas Joseph Pierron (1819-1896) & Ann Marguerite Grilliot (1821-1902). They emigrated from Lorraine, France in 1839.

Christina's birth and death dates are unknown. She married Jonathan Koenig (1757-1837)- my 7th great grand uncle.

After Research:
Anna Christine Brinker was born on 12 Mar 1759 in Northampton County, Pennsylvania and died on 16 Nov 1797 in Westmoreland County, PA. Her parents were Jacob Brinker (1727-1798) & Susannah Hinkle (1727-1798). I don't think she had any siblings.

Christine married John Jonathan Koenig (1757-1837) and they had at least 2 children:
1. Elizabeth Koenig
2. Joseph King (1794-1851)
