Earl Mason Mendenhall (1925-1961)- Deputy police officer in Ventura County, California. 

On 15 Jul 1961, he was transporting an mentally ill prisoner. For whatever reason, the prisoner was not handcuffed and was sitting in the front passenger seat when he reached over, grabbed the steering wheel, causing the car to run into a concrete bridge pillar. Mendenhall died while the prisoner escaped.
