Killed, Part 1

Date: 07 Feb 1931
Place: Dayton, Ohio

It is unknown whether he was walking for some lunch, heading home, or running an errand, but at 12-noon, on Feb 07, 1931, 60 year old Joseph Jeckering was hit by a car crossing the street. He was just outside of his place of work- Brinkman Engineering Company on Kiser street where he was vice president. The driver of the vehicle was 22 year old Arza Noble.
Noble could have easily left Mr. Jeckering at the scene, but instead, put him in his car and drove him home where he was then taken to the hospital after police were called and the incident investigated. Noble was absolved from blame and Jeckering was taken to the hospital where he died two days later of his injuries as well as pneumonia.

Joseph Herman Jeckering  was my 2nd great-grandfather. He had a wife and 5 children.

But who was this Arza Noble?

All we know at this point is from what we know off ofJeckering's obituary, his name and address- 144 Linden Ave.

Let's investigate!

We know that he was living on Linden Ave in 1931, so it's a good chance that he would have been living there in 1930-- let's check out the U.S. census record for 1930.

~1930 United States Census Record for Dayton, Montgomery, Ohio.
144 Linden Ave- Home is Owned, Valued @ $8400

I couldn't find Arza in the 1940 US census, but I was able to find his US WWII Draft Card:

Arza Marlin Noble
Born: 18 May 1909 in Dayton, Ohio--- so the census record was off on his birth by about 4 years! That makes him 22 when he hit my 2nd great-grandfather with his car.

His parents were Fredrick Alexander Noble (1873-1964) &
                                                 Wealthie O. Furnace Noble (1874-1952)

I also found a Ohio Death Record for him and a memorial for him on Findagrave.com.

Arza Marlin Noble
Born: 18 May 1909 in Dayton, Ohio
Died: 12 Sep 1984 in Dayton, Ohio, age 75

His wife was Lois Lucille George
(Daughter of Clyde Loy George (1883-1917) & Emma Cardo (1887-1918))
Born: 15 Mar 1910 in Ohio
Died: 10 Jan 1990 in Kettering, Ohio, age 79

And an obituary on Newspapers.com

Looks as though he and his wife never had children.

I decided to check him out in Newspapers.com. It appears he made some pretty poor choices but some good ones too...

23 Dec 1933, Dayton Daily News:

Not so good of a guy after all!

28 Sep 1935, The Dayton Herald:

09 Nov 1945, The Cincinnati Enquirer :
At the top of the article, it's titled "Licensed in Kentucky".

So, it looks like he and his wife Lois became licensed carpenters (?) or just licensed? Not entirely sure, the newspapers seemed a bit vague on this one.

This was the only "Good" article I found on Arza...unfortunately.
