A Million Mendenhalls- Charles Jesse Mendenhall 1796-1823

Charles Jesse Mendenhall

Born: 25 Aug 1796 in Wilmington, Delaware

Charles was one of 13 children born to Capt. Thomas Mendenhall (1759-1843) & Mary Zane (1769-1828).

Charle's 12 siblings:

1. Lydia Maria (1787-1865)

2. Edward Scull (1788-1853)

3. Philip Henry (1790-1851)

4. Joel Zane (1791-1870)

5. Thomas Jefferson (1793-1843)

6. Hester Zane (1795-1795)

7. William Augustus (1798-1878)

8. John Dickinson (1801-1836)

9. Benjamin Franklin (1801-1868)

10. Susan Zane (1803-1825)

11. Mary (1806-1866)

12. Esther Williamson (1808-1828)

Like his father, in 1821, Charles was in the military. He served as an assistant surgeon. With a fine job and his father's successful military career, Charles probably had a promising future ahead, but his life was cut short when he died on 16 Oct 1823 in Praire Due Chien, Wisconsin. He was 27 and killed in a duel!

Found this awesome imagine on Google images this morning

It make's me wonder- why was he challenged (or, why did he challenge someone) to a duel in the first place? You see these things in movies and don't really think about it happening to someone in your tree!

Charles never married and unfortunately, I don't know where his burial site is (if there is one).

~Charles is my 4th cousin, 8x removed.
