Today's surname biography is Hemelt. My 7th great grandfather- Gerhard Jeckering (1673-1735) married twice. His second wife- my 7th great grandmother- was Susanna Hemelt.

b. 06 Nov 1691 in Mehringen, Germany
d. 17 Aug 1765 in Drievorden, Germany

Her parents were Johann Hemelt (1656- ?) and Gebbula Rolfs (1661-1761).

One great resource that I used to research this name was The local heritage book Emsburen. There are 100 Hemelt individuals listed in the book between 1450 and 1881. The earliest Hemelt I could find (using this site) was Johann Hemelt- born about 1450 in Emsburen (place is marked as questionable in the book). The book also doesn't have any other information for Johann- no parents, wife or children are listed.

My 7th great grandmother- Susanna Hemelt- is in this heritage book as well. The oldest Hemelt in her lineage listed is her great grandfather- Wilhelm Hemelt (born about 1605 in Mehringen. He was married to Margaretha Piggeon (born about 1605 in Emsburen) and they had 4 children.

Mehringen, Germany seems to be the main town this family has come from or at least stayed in for many generations. 

Researching this town was difficult--Wikipedia.com describes it as:

Mehringen is a former municipality in the district of Salzlandkreis, in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Since 01 Jan 2008, it has been part of the town of Aschersleben.  

There seems to be quite a few Hemelt individuals who immigrated to America, although one can only assume that they all came from Germany.
