Texas Birth Index- Mendenhall Surname, Part 11 (1918)

~Lee Gripon Mendenhall- 2nd Cousin, 3x Removed 



Lee Gripon Mendenhall was born on August , 1918 in Chambers County, Texas to Corwin Guy Mendenhall (1891-1961) and Eula Leona Gripon (1894-1989). He had 2 siblings- Corwin Guy Jr. and Marilyn Alice. 

His brother Corwin- I wrote about in my previous post- you can read about him Here.





Lee married at the age of 28 on May 31, 1947 in Jefferson, Texas. He married Miss Zelma Mae Measeles (1918-1993) and together, they had one daughter: Laura Lynn Mendenhall (1953-1968). Laura was only 14 at the time- having died of a cerebral hemorrhage due to a thrombocytopenia and acute leukemia. To the right is a picture of Laura.



Lee lived to be 83 years old and died on July 7, 2002 in La Porte, Texas. He is buried beside his wife in the Fairview Cemetery in Winnie, Texas.





~George Elby Mendenhall- 9th cousin, 3x Removed 




George was born on September 15, 1918 in San Patricio County, Texas to Elby Leroy Mendenhall (1885-1941) and Jessie Smith Sutcliffe (1885-1959). He was the youngest of 4- Alberta, Francis and Joseph. 



George never married or had any children. He died at the age of 25 while fighting in WWII in Italy. He is buried in the Sinton Cemetery in Sinton, Texas.

~Thomas Lewis Mendenhall- 7th Cousin, 5x Removed 

Thomas (went by Lewis) was born on March 23, 1916 in Wichita Falls, Texas to Thomas Wayne Mendenhall (1877-1953) and Vaddie Mabel Lougley (1879-1973). He was one of 7 children; siblings were Dale Lambert, Walter Lee, Geron Lynn, Wayne Hollis, Marion Louise, and Robert Zane. 



Thomas married Anna Lea Waddell (1916-1971) and they had one son: Thomas Wayne "Tommy" Mendenhall (1939-2012).


~Corwin Guy Mendenhall Jr.- 2nd Cousin, 3x Removed 


Corwin Jr. was born on December 23, 1916 in Beaumont, Texas to Corwin Guy Mendenhall (1891-1961) and Eula Leona Gripon (1894-1989). He had two siblings- Lee Gripon (1918-2002) & Marilyn Alice (1921-1988). 


Corwin enlisted in the military on June 1, 1939. He married first to Drucilla Ann Weedlin (1917-1976) and they had 3 children: Corwin Guy III, Rick and Suzanne.

He married secondly after his wife died. On February 28, 1977, he married Ruth Land (b. 1916)

Corwin died on July 7, 2006 at the age of 89 years old. He is buried beside his first wife in the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.

~Carl R. Mendenhall (1913-1944)- 31 Years Ago- Germany

~Donald V. Treat (1918-1943)- 25 Years Old

Honoring all Veterans


Happy Veterans Day!



I would like to every veteran in my tree- dead or alive- but that would be impossible, as I have too many people to go through, But here are a few: 


#1: Paul George Jeckering (1925-1954)- My Grandfather- WWII- Enlisted on 05 Oct 1943 at the age of 18- was still in high school! He was in the 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry/Regiment- Ohio. He was a cook and served in Luzon, Philippines and Nagoya, Japan. He was discharged at Camp Atterbury in Edinburgh, Indiana on 15 Feb 1946. He was awarded the Philippine Liberation Medal. 





#2: Neil Mendenhall- My uncle- (b. 1947)



#3: Harold Earl Mendenhall (1916-1989)- My Grandfather- Enlisted in the Army in WWII- 24 Aug 1942 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

#4: Earl Dwight Mendenhall (1894-1972)- My Great Grandfather- Enlisted in WWI and WWII- I don't know if he actually served or not....




#5: Marion Richard Mendenhall (1873-1948)- My 2nd Great Grandfather- Registered for WWI- I don't know if he actually served though-- 



#6: Aaron Mendenhall (1828-1894)- My 4th Great Grandfather- Serviced in the Civil War- Corporal for Company F, 152nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He enlisted 19 Oct 1861, discharged 17 Nov 1864- length of service- 3 years, 28 days. 




#7: Mordecai Mendenhall (1713-1803)- My 8th Great Grandfather- didn't serve in the American Revolution, but he did receive Patriotic Service because he assisted soldiers with food and housing.
