Who is John Jeckering?

When searching through Findagrave.com, searching "Jeckering"- my maiden name, I came upon a name that I didn't have in my tree-

John Jeckering (1919-1934)
Buried in Saint Rose Cemetery in Cadott, Chippewa, Wisconsin

So, of course, I had to research him! :)

I started out with researching his name on Ancestry.com searching engine and looking into census records but there was some confusion with the date of birth-- here's what I found in two census records:

1920 U.S. Census: 19 Jan 1920
                             La Crosse, La Crosse, Wisconsin
Mormon Coolie Rd.- St. Michael's Orphanage
John Jackering- age 6, born 1914 Wisconsin

1930 U.S. Census: 03 Apr 1930
                             Waukesha, Waukesha, Wisconsin
College Ave- Wisconsin Industrial School for Boys
John Jeckering- age 16, born 1914 Wisconsin

You can read more about this school Here.

I kind of came to a dead end with the Census records, which makes sense because John died in 1934. So, I went to Ancestry.com's Member trees and I found SO many people who had John as the son of Gerhard Bernard Jackering (1845-1922) and Anna F. Houdick (1870-1933), which would make John my 4th cousin, 4x removed!

I don't know why John was in an orphanage and then later a school for troubled boys, but I can only imagine he had some type of disability.

John married Dorothy Elaine Comerford (1916-1990) before 1932 and they had a son- James John (1932-1989). John died in May 1934 and Dorothy remarried only two months later on 18 Jul 1934 to Perry Curtis Farmer (1903-1985). John's son- James John took his step-father's name- Farmer- James John Farmer.

James John Farmer (1932-1989) married Joan Elizabeth Schubert (1930-2012) in September, 1954 and they had 8 children.

Just by finding out who this John Jeckering was, I found out that I had:

~Another 4th cousin, 4x removed
~A 5th cousin, 3x removed
~8 6th cousins, 2x removed

Pretty cool!

Here's a Tip for Ya!

Hey Everyone,

I found a little "trick" to quickly identify member in your family who have died young, as an infant or child, or have died while giving birth. I've been using this trick for a couple of months and I really like it.

Here's what it looks like:

So, just by looking at it, you can see that one child- Elizabeth Martha Jeckering died at a young age because I have the little angel picture there- I have this picture in place for a child that has died- ages 2-18.

Here's a close up:

You can also see quickly that the two youngest daughters- Irene and "Infant" died as infants or were stillborn because I have the picture of the baby angel- this is for babies stillborn or 1 day- 1 year.

Here's a close up:

Here is another example of these pictures in my tree:

This one shows my 3rd picture that I use for women who have died during childbirth or shortly after due to complications- the mother with wings holding a child.

You can see right away that Mary Jeckering died giving birth to her second child- you can also see that both her daughters- both named Mary- didn't survive.

Here's a close up:

All three of these pictures that I use, I got off of Google and use them for my own private tree on Ancestry.com.

The Mendenhall Family and Education

Every few months, I get the Mendenhall Family Association Newsletter- Mendenhall Matters. I love receiving learning new things about my distant relatives/ancestors!

I received September's newsletter yesterday in the mail and this one was interesting because one section focused on education. It is titled: Educating through Quaker Networks and Beyond: A Mendenhall Family Legacy. I thought I'd share some of these wonderful stories/influences with you!!! :) Thank you Mendenhall Family Association for the wonderful newsletter!

Here are some of the people it mentioned:

~Judith Mendenhall (b. 30 Dec 1789)- 3rd cousin, 8x removed.
Judith was educated in Pennsylvania and then she returned to Jamestown, North Carolina and opened a Jamestown school where she taught from 1815-1819, before she married.

~Richard Mendenhall (1778-1851)- 3rd cousin, 8x removed.
Richard ran a free night school in Jamestown for students of all races. In 1824 he opened a store using his tanning trade in the building across the street from his house. This house, now called the Mendenhall Plantation, and the store building are still preserved there in Jamestown. His tannery trade and the store were later used to train slaves who lived there or nearby.

~George C. Mendenhall (1798-1860)- 3rd cousin, 8x removed.
George became an attorney and educated future lawyers. As an attorney he served as a benefactor and trustee to many educational efforts such as the Jamestown Female College in the 1850s.

~Nereus Mendenhall (1819-1893)- 4th cousin, 7x removed.
Nereus, like his father, was a reader of the classical authors. In 1839, he became one of the first teachers in the New Garden Boarding School. He then studied medicine and civil engineering and became involved in each profession for nearly 10 years. In the 1850's, he decided his true calling was to go back to teaching. He returned to the New Garden Boarding School for the next 40 years and was credited with keeping the school functioning during the Civil War years and preserving its future. The school grew and after 1888, it was approved as a full 4 year college taking the name of Guilford College. Nereus served as president for a short time and was noted for his educational influence on James Franklin Davis and Lewis Lyndon Hobbs who succeeded him as president of the college. Both of these latter men married Mendenhall daughters.

~Cyrus Pegg Mendenhall (1817-1884)- 4th cousin, 7x removed.
Cyrus was one of the founders of the Greensboro Female Academy which later became Greensboro College.

~Minerva and Judith J. Mendenhall
Minerva (b. 1813)- 4th cousin, 7x removed
Judith J. (b. 1831)- 4th cousin, 7x removed
Both these ladies were teachers in early Guilford County schools. Judith also ran a school for freedmen- 1866-1870.

~Mary Mendenhall Hobbs (1852-1930)- 5th cousin, 6x removed.
Mary raised many thousands of dollars for the education of poor girls and founded Mary Hobbs Hall at Guilford College for their benefit. She taught mathematics for many years in the college and guided the curriculum for the women. Like her father before her, she lived right on campus and they both became retired patrons of the college. Mary married another teacher, Lewis Lyndon Hobbs (1849-1932), who then became the president of Guilford College for many years. Her husband was Clerk of the North Carolina Yearly Meeting of Quakers for 24 years. Two of her sons, Allen and Richard Junius Hobbs, became professors and Deans in the University of North Carolina system.

~Gertrude Mendenhall (1862-1926)- 5th cousin, 6x removed.
(sister of Mary (above))- Gertrude joined her sister on the faculty of Guilford College and appears in the first faculty photo. She also taught mathematics there for many years.

~Mary Eliza Mendenhall Davis (1850-1923)- 5th cousin, 6x removed
Mary also appears in the first faculty photo. She married one of the early leaders of Guilford College, James Franklin Davis.

~Elihu Emery Mendenhall (1817-1906)- 4th cousin, 7x removed (Mary Mendenhall Davis' father)
Elihu was elected to the board of trustees of New Garden Boarding School in 1873. He served as chairman of the board from 1875-1902 and served as chairman emeritus afterwards until his death in 1906. Elihu was chairman of the board who led to the growth of the school toward becoming qualified as a fully accredited college.

Artists in the Family- Part 2- Paul G. Jeckering (1925-1954)

I received this wonderful article from a cousin and I am very excited to share it!
This is a article in my grandfather's high school newspaper- Chaminade News from Chaminade Catholic High School.

Paul G. Jeckering
b. 19 May 1925 in Dayton, Ohio
d. 11 Jan 1954 in Dayton, Ohio

Paul was an artist- he made sculptures and enjoyed drawing.
The words are a little difficult to read on here, so I will put a translation at the bottom for anyone who wishes to read the actual article :)

It reads:

Paul Jeckering Sculptures Statue of Fr. Chaminade

Paul Jeckering of Junior A, who has long been interested in sculpture work, recently completed a life-size statue of Father Chaminade, found of the Society of Mary. The statue, which represents about a year's work by skilled hands, was donated to Chaminade by Jeckering.

He received his experience in courses at the Dayton Art Institute and was inspired by a five year old interest in sculpture work. Up to this time he had completed only miniature projects.

The statue stands on a small square pedestal and is about five and one-half feet high. It depicts Father Chaminade holding the Constitutions of the Society of Mary in his left hand. He is dressed in cassock and stole, and on his head is worn his familiar skull cap. The statue itself is a work of simplicity, but it captures the full expression of the beloved founder.

Besides being interested in sculpture, Jeckering is also prominent in extra-curricular activities at school. He received a band letter for his services as a charter member, and was among the highest in last year's paper drive. Besides this, he is also a staff artist on the Chaminade News, and has a sketch on the sport page of this issue.
