When exploring multiples online, I wanted to write about someone
different. I wanted someone I could easily research (Living in the United States
in the early-Mid 1900s). May I introduce Marion and Charlotte Story.
Marion Delroy Story was living in Franklin County, Ohio when he
divorced his first wife, he left for California, leaving her to raise their
only child, Helen. He then moved to Bakersfield, married Charlotte Lacount and
together they had 20 children, including 4 sets of twins (all were born in
California).

A couple things that bug me… the Story Family are not in the 1920 or
1930 United States Federal Census’ and then in the 1940 census, there is
nothing listed for the father as an occupation… and nobody else in the family
has a job. How in the world did they support so many kids unemployed? LOL
Perhaps I can clear up a bit of the mystery for you.
ReplyDeleteI can tell you that June Rose was not born in California in 1926. She was born in Vancouver, WA.
Family history as passed on to me by my mother, June, is that Marion, her father, was an undercover detective during those "missing" years for which you cannot account. After his detective years, My grandfather was a self-employed artist and sign painter in Bakersfield, CA., which is why you could not find his employment records. He, was also commissioned to paint the frescos that are still in the Greek Orthodox Church on Truxtun Ave in Bakersfield, CA. Also, if you would consider the oldest children in 1940 were only 18 years old, they were most likely seniors in high school and not yet working. I can tell you that my mother, June, worked for the telephone company, "Ma Bell" in the 40's through mid-50's and helped to support the family, as did some of the older children. So, although there were many years of hard times (The Great Depression and many years thereafter) The Story's always found a way to provide for the family. Respectfully, Carrie Henson Kelley, daughter of Billy Gene Henson and June Rose Story.
Thank you for your comment Carrie! Very interesting info! ❤
DeleteI remember the Story family - they lived on Red bank Road, in what was then Fairfax.
ReplyDeleteMarion and Charlotte are contestants on Groucho Marx's "You Bet Your Life" radio show on 11th January 1950.
ReplyDeleteTheir weekly groceries are £100 which I can only imagine was a lot back then.
