A Million Mendenhalls #1416: Charles Robert Mendenhall (1884-1957)

Charles is the one in front, far right.



Charles was the first child of Jeremiah Mendenhall (1859-1891) & Eliza Jane Smith (1861-1953). He had 3 siblings: Murray Orlando (1884-1957), Lydia Adeline (1887-1951) and Tom Benjamin (1889-1966).

Charles was a farmer. He married Mary Alice Griffith on 08 Jul 1907. Mary Alice Griffith (1889-1972) was the daughter of William Griffith (1845-1923) & Sarah Ellen Mondon (1848-1926). Charles and Mary had 5 children: 

1. Freda Juanita (1908-1985) 
2. Cletus Naomi Fern (1910-1988)
3. Letha C. (1916-1983)
4. William Jeremiah (1924-1985)
5. Melvin Lee (1927-1989)

Census records: 

1910: 28 April- Crooked Creek, Jasper County, Illinois. 
26 year old Charles is head of household, working as a farmer on a "rented farm". He lives with his wife Mary (22) and daughter Freda (2). 

1920: 10 January- Crooked Creek, Jasper County, Illinois.
35 year old Charles R. is head of household, working as a farmer on a farm. He lives with his wife Mary A (33) and 2 daughters Cletus N. (9) & Letha C. (3). 


1930: 19 April- Crooked Creek, Jasper County, Illinois.
46 year old Charles is head of household. He's changed professions- is now "hauling" as a team- I can assume hay. His home is rented. He lives with his wife Mary (42), daughter Letha (13) & two sons William (6) & Melvin (2). 


1940: 15 April- Crooked Creek, Jasper County, Illinois.
55 year old Charles is head of household. He is back to being a farmer- home is still rented. He lives with his wife Mary Alice (50) and 2 sons William (16) & Melvin Lee (12).

Charles died at the age of 73 years old. He was buried in Songer Cemetery in Rose Hill, Jasper County, Illinois.




Charles is my 3rd Cousin, 4x Removed.
