Mappy Monday: Marridge Hill, Wiltshire, England

My 13th great grandfather, Thomas Mildenhall (1580-1639), was born in Marridge Hill, Wiltshire, England.

What's interesting is that when you type "Marridge Hill, Wiltshire, England" into the Google search bar, the majority of the page includes Mendenhall ancestry, which I think is pretty cool!

Marridge Hill is located north of Ramsbury and north east of Marlborough in England.

The research for this town was kind of dull! There isn't much online about Marridge Hill, and the stuff that I did find-- was all about Mendenhall ancestry- quite disappointing. It isn't even listed in the list of civil parishes in Wiltshire on Wikipedia.

There are homes still selling in Marridge Hill (Marridge Hill House for Sale), so the town must still be a functioning town, but nothing worth mentioning in the World Wide Web!

If anyone has any information on this town-- popular buildings, landscape, etc,-- and would like to share, please do so in the comment section! I would love to know more!

  1. Beautiful buildings! I haven't traced any line back this far, though I'm getting very close. Also, I just traced my first ancestor back to England a few months ago. To date, I've found that family in Lancashire & Yorkshire. (http://theenthusiasticgenealogist.blogspot.com/2014/03/a-first-jump-across-pond.html)

  2. I noticed that from YDNA testing the Mildenhall family YDNA is close to the Putman/Pootman, Broehle de Plater, and Vom Broch families of Germany. Anyone every discover a Germany connection with the Mildenhall family? I note also that in German and Dutch "milde" means to be kind, gentle, or mild.

    1. I haven't heard of a German connection from that far back--- only connections after Mendenhall's came to America... sorry. That makes me curious though! :)

  3. My grandmother, Mary Alice Mendenhall, has a Mendenhall genealogy that goes uninterrupted to the 12th Century in the Mildenhall area. I do not know any Mendenhall genealogy prior to the 12th Century.

  4. After doing my research I found the book. History, Correspondence, and Pedigress of the Mendenhall by William Mendenhall. Another great genealogywas written by Henry Hart Beeson.

  5. There is a Mendehall family association that can be found online. This site has information on DNA, genealogies, reunions and news letters. To answer Putnam, there was an article published about our family migrations that traced the family back to the year 500 in Jutland and the name Von Mildinghulf. (see family association/reunion). For JohnrusselBatchelder. The genealogy is solid back to the year 1500 but anything before that is spotty. Meaning that many doucuments can be found but there is no proof of the lineage. Such as doomsday book , Book of , first east india company (sir john the cucold), 1235 beefeater, wax rolls exc. The earliest known mendenhall by name was YDania in az document from 1220. They are thought to have come to England with William the conqueror. The name to look for there would be Di Mildehale.
