Meet Anna Shomber Niles- My 2nd Great-Grandmother
(Sadly, I don't have a picture of Anna)
Anna was born in April 1868 in Ohio to John Shomber (1836-1917) & Mary Elizabeth Catharine Zacharias (1839-1911). She had 4 siblings (that I could find): John, Ellen C., Catharine, and Mary Ida.
Anna married at the young age of 16 to Joseph Niles (1857-1933) on 19 Jul 1884 in Darke County, Ohio.
The couple had 3 children:
1. Bertha "Bessie May" Niles (1886-1966)
2. Earl David Niles (1891-1969)
3. Edna Grace Niles (1894-1933)- (my great-grandmother)
U.S. Census Records:
1900: 27 June- Mississinawa, Darke County, Ohio- Anna, 32, is listed as "wife" to her husband Joseph, 42, "head of household". Joseph is a tile factory laborer. They have 3 children: Bessie (14), Earl (8), and Edna (6). The home- they own a house, mortgage-free.
1910: 19 April- Mississinawa, Darke County, Ohio- Anna, 42, is listed as "wife" to her husband Joseph, 52, "head of household". Joseph is a laborer of odd jobs. They have 2 children at home: Earl (18) & Edna (15). The home- they own a house, mortgage-free (probably same house as in 1900).
1920: 03 February- Jackson, Darke County, Ohio- Anna, 51, is listed as "wife" to her husband Joseph, 62, "head of household". Joseph is a manager at a general store. They have no children at home. The home- they own a house, mortgage-free. This new house is near farmland as a lot of their neighbors's home are listed as farms.
1930: 07 April- Jackson, Darke County, Ohio- Anna, 62, is listed as "wife" to her husband Joseph, 72, "head of household". Joseph is a Truck Farmer (?) for a friends farm. There are no children living at home. The home- they own their house, mortgage-free, valued at $1500.
1940: 17 May 1940- Jackson, Darke County, Ohio- Anna (listed as Hannah), 71, is listed as "head of household", is widowed and living alone. She has no profession. The home- she owns the house, valued at $400. So, either she moved since her husband died, or her home depreciated.
Anna died at the age of 79 on 19 Jul 1947 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana. She suffered from Chronic Cholecystitis and cause of death is listed as "probably (?) sarcoma". Union City is where her daughter Edna was living when she died in 1933 (same year as her father). I'm assuming Anna went to live with family after 1940.

Anna is buried the Union City Cemetery in Union City, Indiana. She is buried next to her husband. One thought I had- why was her husband buried in Union City, Indiana when they lived in Jackson, Ohio when Joseph died in 1933...but then, I looked on a map- it's only a 2 hour drive- not that far.
