Last week, my mother was visiting her brother in Ohio and he shared this canvas he has that has been passed down in the family. She shared pictures of it through text:
My mother claimed it was a discharge notice for John Munn (John Park Munn 1841-1908)- my 3rd great-grandfather- from the revolutionary war. Obviously, she was mistaken because it was from the civil war. And I found out today that it's not a discharge notice, but a souvenir document, or a lithograph to show the veteran's service record.
After the Civil War, an organization called the G.A.R. (the Grand Army of the Republic) made these for families to raise money to build a monument "The Easel Monument Project". The monument was never built and the funds disappeared. Some of those involved were even indicted for fraud!
Although the monument was never built, it's definitely a wonderful family heirloom to have in the family!
Our lithograph is for my 3rd great-grandfather- John Park Munn. His service record on the piece reads:
John Munn
Enlisted from Clearfield Co., Pa, April 24, 1861 and was
mustered into the United States Service at Clearfield, Pa., ____ as a private of Co. "I" ______.
35th Regt. Pennsylvania Vol. Infantry 6th Reserves
under Capt. Daniel Bradbury and Col. W.W. Rickett (?) to serve
three years during the war. The Reg moved to Wash-
ington, where they were mustered in and assigned to (?)
(?) Div. 5th Corps, then moved to (?), where they
were engaged in guard and (?) only and assisted in
constructing forts. Said John Munn engaged in battles in
Dranesville, Va. Dec 20 '62, Gainesville or Grovertown (?), Aug 28, 29 '62. Ma(?) on 2nd Bull Run, Aug 30 '62 (?)----
Fredricksburg, Va, Dec 13, Chancellorsville, May 14, '63
(Then the picture is cut-off)
How I'm related to John Munn:

Louella Ida "Ella" Munn (1872-1958)- 2nd Great-Grandmother
Earl Dwight Mendenhall (1894-1972)- Great-Grandfather
