Saturday Night Fun- on Sunday morning

I always enjoy participating in Genea-Musing's Saturday Night Genealogy Fun. Last night's challenge was: How Many Sarah LNU's Are in Your Genealogy Database?. I like this challenge because it kind of ties in with another blog post(s) I'm currently working on- One Person at a Time- Trying to clean up my ULN's in my family tree!


I have 17 members in my tree with the name "Sarah"
8 Sarah's have no birth or death dates

I have chosen to write about 3 Sarah's:

~Sarah ULN (1824- ?)- married William McDaniel (1824-1880) and they had at least 1 daughter: Nancy Elizabeth McDaniel (1853-1912). Nancy married my 2nd great grand uncle- John Abraham Hendricks.

I did some more research on Sarah. I was unable to find her maiden name, but I found out that she was married in 1841. She was born in Nov 1824 in Ohio and died on 10 Jan 1910 in Pataskala, Licking, Ohio. She and William had 2 more children besides Nancy- Hiram Gideon (b. 1846) and Reuben (b. 1854). 

~Sarah ULN (b & d unknown)- married Thomas Kendall (1732-1781) and they had at least 1 daughter- Mary Kendall (1746-1822)- Mary married Elijah Mendenhall- my 2nd cousin, 9x removed.

What I found on Sarah- She was born Sarah Pilkington to Edward Pilkington (1687-1752) & Mary Webb (1688-1743). She was born in 1728 in England and died about 1750 in Pennsylvania. She married Thomas Kendall (1732-1781) on 13 Nov 1740 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. 

~Sarah ULN (b & d unknown)- married William Yarnall (b. 1755) and they had at least 1 daughter: Elizabeth Yarnall (1785-1861). Elizabeth married Walker Yarnall (1784-1868) who is my 4th cousin, 8x removed.

What I found on Sarah- She was born Sarah Yarnall to John Yarnall (1725-1809) & Sarah Ellis (1729-?). She was born on 24 Sep 1756 in Thornbury, Chester, Pennsylvania. She died on 12 Jan 1825. She had 3 siblings- Jesse (b. 1750), Rachel (b. 1752), and Ann (b. 1754). Sarah first married a Mr. Happersett. She married William Yarnall in 1781 and they had 10 children:
Mary (b. 1782), Elizabeth (b. 1785), Thomas (b. 1787), William (b. 1789), Bennett (b. 1791), Sarah Ann (b. 1792), Margaret (b. 1794), Peter H. (b. 1795), Jonas P. (b. 1797) and Abner (b. 1802).

My Dream tonight - Death

I went to bed about an hour, an hour and a half ago. My husband is always jealous because I fall asleep so quickly, average is under two minutes (he's timed me). Anyways, it's more almost 12:50 am. About 20 minutes ago I awoke from this dream that I was having... It was by far the weirdest and most real - feeling dream I think I've ever had in my life.
I was driving on this road that doesn't look familiar to me now. It was dark and raining and I know I was going to fast. I seemed to be in a desperate hurry. I never looked in the back seat but I know my son Jack was in the car with me.
So I'm driving and the road turns curvy and I'm going to fast. Before I know it, my car is going over the guardrail after I failed to make the turn to the right. What's crazy about this part is... It felt so real... All of did. I was seat belted in but I was watching as my car plummeted of this cliff. I was screaming and telling jack that I loved him and that I was sorry. It had to be a long drop because I also had time to wonder if I could possibly survive this... If it would hurt to die.
my car hit the rocks below and nothing. No pain. Only blackness. Then it was as if I was opening my eyes in a pitch dark room with one bright light in front of me. Then I was in this area that seemed to be outdoors, like an outdoor shopping area but nobody was around and it was super quiet. I was pushing jack in the stroller but again, I don't remember looking at him.
This thin black woman came to me and told me she was there to show me around. She said I was dead.
The rest is a real blurr... She was showing me around and I had no idea where I was, there was no name spoken... No heaven... No hell... I was just there. I kept crying because I missed Jim. I felt numb... No happiness, no sadness either... Except for the crying... It was THE weirdest dream ever!
Then, as I was waking up, I was standing in line for food with this lady. I was upset because I had no money for food and she was assuring me that I had plenty of money on my pocket. I looked up and I said that I didn't want the dream to end... I wanted to find out what happened. Then I opened my eyes and I was in my bed.
I've never done this in a dream... Knowin that I was dreaming... And I've never officially died. Usually if I'd been in a rock - colliding car crash, as it went black  I would wake up!

Before Research:
Angela was born in 1641 and died in 1709. She married Johann Hoppenjan (1629-1709) and they had at least 1 son- Lambert Hoppenjan (1686-?)- who married Anna Jeckering (1686-?).


After Research:
Unfortunately, I was unable to find Angela's maiden name. I did find out that she was married in 1685 in Emsburen, she was born in Germany and died in Ahlde, Germany. She and Johann had 4 children:

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks- Week 16- Johann Jeckering

Last week ancestor was Euphemia Jeckering. This week's highlight is Johann Jeckering who was born in 1660 in Kirchspiel, Germany. At first, I thought that Johann could be a possible sibling of Euphemia and Gerhard but because he was born the same year as Euphemia and he was born in Kirchspiel instead of Drievorden, I don't think it's possible. 

Johann is, however, still related to my family. He is the 3rd great grandfather of wife of 1st cousin, 5x removed- (say that 10x fast!) 

Johann married Christine (unknown last name) in 1685 in Emsubren. Christine was born about 1665 in Germany. Johann and Christine had at least 1 daughter- Anna Jeckering (b. 19 Aug 1691- Ahlde, Emsland, Germany).

All we know about Adelaide was that she was born in 1897. She married Frank J. Westgerdes (1897-1980) and she had one daughter- Rita Mae Westgerdes (1925-2008). Rita married my 2nd cousin, 2x removed- Aloysius Henry Trick (1925-2009).


After Research: 

I was very happy to find a lot of information for Adelaide! Her full name was:

d. 08 May 1970 in Dayton, Ohio

Parents- Bernard James Otting (1856-1917) & Mary Josephine Rathweg (1859-1944).

The Otting Family: Adelaide's grandfather- Bernard Otting (1828-1902) came to America from Germany.

1930 (age 35)- 857 Latham St., Dayton, Ohio

1940 (age 45)- Randolph, Montgomery, Ohio


Adelaide didn't complete her education- the 1940 census stated that the highest grade completed was the 8th grade. She married Frank on 20 May 1924 in Dayton, Ohio.

Mary and John owned J.A. Heider Groceries & Meats. They lived here with their 11 children (2 children died in childhood). In 1900 they even had a white servant- Francis Manning (age 35). I'm assuming she was hiring to help with the children and the cleaning since the family owned their own business.

I've never been a huge fan of New Years- never really been to many New Years parties or was one to make resolutions. 

With my husband, we do have a New Years tradition that we've done every since New Years day since our first one together on 01 January 2010-- We go to the movies. It may not seem like a lot- but it's just something we've always done and I cherish that memory. 

I know the first movie we saw together on New Years day was a very popular/new one because I remember waiting in line for a long time just to get in- but I can't remember what movie it was. 

I know the following year- 2011- we saw New Years Eve with Zac Efron, Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert De Niro. That was a cute movie.

My 10th great grandfather- John Mendenhall (1659-1743) is buried in the Concord Friends Meeting Burial Ground in Concordville, Delaware, Pennsylvania.

Saturday Night Fun (on Sunday morning)

Happy Saturday! 

I always enjoy participating in Randy's Saturday Night Genealogy Fun challenges- (Genea-Musings) 

Tonight, I decided to do one from January 18, 2014- How many Children/Grandchildren in your Matrilineal Line?

Here's the challenge:

1. Consider your Matrilineal Line (mother's mother's mother's, etc.) families- the ones from your mother back through her mother all the way back to the first of that matrilineal line in your family group sheets or genealogy database. List the names of these mothers, and their lifespan years.

2. Use your paper charts or genealogy software program to create a Descendants chart (dropline or graphical) that provide the children and their children. 

3. Count how many children they had (with all spouses), and the children of those children in your records and/or database. Add those numbers to the list.

4. What does this list of children and grandchildren tell you about these persons in your matrilineal line? Does this task indicate areas that you need to do more research to fill out families and find potential cousins?

5. Tell us about it in your own blog post, or in a comment to this post, or in a comment on Facebook or Google+.

Here we go! 

1. My Matrilineal line is: 

~Margaret Mary (unknown) (1740-?)- had 1 daughter, 3 grandchildren 
~Rebecca Cashatt (1783-1862)- had 3 children, 12 grandchildren 
~Hannah Johnson (1806-1878)- had 6 children, 32 grandchildren
~Rebecca J. Ridge (1830-1900)- had 6 children, at least 6 grandchildren

~America Hoover (1859-bef 1880)- had 1 child, 2 grandchildren

~Anna Jane Thornton (1875-1954)- had 2 children, 3 grandchildren

~Ruby Mae Henderson (1901-1990)- had 2 children, 6 grandchildren

~Helen Ruth Seaver (1923-1981)- had 4 children, 13 grandchildren

~My mom (1957- living)- had 3 children, 8 grandchildren (13 grandchildren with step children)


3. I did this by just adding up the number of children and grandchildren in my Ancestry.com account.

4. The list above tells me: 
~When I first started this project, I only had as far back as Anna Jane Thornton. I wanted to include more so I did more research- so this project took me a lot longer than I had anticipated.
~I need to find more information about Rebecca J. Ridge's grandchildren.
~The number of children/grandchildren fluctuate- America Hoover most likely died in child birth so she only had 1 child. I wonder if Margaret Mary was had the same situation. 
~The average number of kids is 3.11. 

Surname Saturday- Hill

My 6th great grandmother was:
 Deidamia Mendenhall ('nee Hill)

b. 1775 in Guilford County, North Carolina
d. 05 Jun 1838 in Bethel Township, Miami, Ohio

Deidamia married Joseph Mendenhall (1770-1833) and they had 14 children!

Her parents were Thomas Hill (1740-1798) &
                             Elizabeth McClellan (1735-1798)

Deidamia's 3x great grandfather- Abraham Hill (1615-1670) immigrated to America from Bedfordshire, England.

I found this crest on Google--- I'm not sure what the top word says-- but this does resemble the "Hill" English family crest.

Surname- Hill

"Hill" is a very popular surname- according to Wikipedia, it means "a person who lived on a hill" and is the 30th most common name in the United Kingdom.

I figured this name would come up with a huge result for this website, and I was right. There are 52,961 results for the name "Hill".

Siblings: unknown- (However, my 7th great grandfather- Gerhard Jeckering (1673-1735) lived in the same town and is around the same age to be Euphemia's younger sibling- which explains the "could possibly be my 7th great grand aunt)
